Kalein is no longer a dream, it is a functioning reality. To have experiences as I described yesterday, there must be beautiful places of solitude.

We currently utilize three properties for the Master Classes and 48 Hours of Solitude (One-on-One Mentoring).

Kalein@Round Cove is 2,000 acres of solitude in the center of a stunning 30,000 conservancy acres near Winchester, TN. The lodge sits on a majestic bluff and is completely off the grid. The property features a cottage, multiple caves (one of which is equipped for the most unique communion and wine tasting experience in the world), garden, skeet shooting, hunting, hiking, swimming, fishing and much more.

Sanctuary is a stunning seven bedroom lodge on seventy plus acres nestled at the foot of fourteen thousand foot Mt. Princeton in Buena Vista, Colorado. It has a conference/prayer room, a music room, gym, theatre and much more. The bedrooms are all equipped with sitting areas, iPod docks, Wifi, and flat screen televisions.

A third property is located near Nashville, TN overlooking Center Hill lake and has two small but rustic elegant cottages. It also has skeet shooting, nearby Burgess falls and Center Hill lake.

These properties are owned by three wonderful couples who have provided stunning accommodations for Kalein experiences at a very nominal cost. I’m very thankful to Nordeck and Mary Claire Thompson, Kevin and Julie Ortenblad, and Roger and Melanie Conner for extending hospitality to Kalein as we prepare property that will be our very own.

During this eleven year journey, I have realized Kalein does not have walls. Experiences have taken place at all the above properties, at our home La Maison des Reves in Franklin, on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, and many other spectacular locations have housed the re:create gatherings.

However, we desperately need a home base to call our own. The above properties are privately owned and only available certain times.

The Woodbury, Tennessee location will be the permanent home base for the global experiences of Kalein. It is 124 verdant acres of complete solitude less than an hour from Nashville. Highlighted by a thirty-five acre undulating meadow, it is completely surrounded by a ridge featuring the highest elevations in the county. The ridge acts as a sound barrier and protection from the outside world. As the gate swings opens to a world of beauty and solitude, if you’re lucky, a red tail hawk will greet you with a majestic flyover

Deer, turkey and an occasional black bear are a few of the myriad animals that grace our land. A quaint and picturesque pond, majestic views and unique sinkholes provide natural delights. An outdoor prayer labyrinth and hiking trails are soon to come.

Funds are presently needed to build a 3500 square ft. rustic elegant lodge that sleeps up to eight, but also provides the perfect location for a solitary retreat. It will be located at the peak of the highest ridge providing stunning views of unobstructed forest and breathtaking sunsets over Tennessee valleys.

Also, the vast recreation areas at Center Hill Lake, fly-fishing on the Caney Fork River and hiking at spectacular Burgess Falls are only minutes away.

Our board of directors, attorney, business manager and CPA have now placed Kalein under the umbrella of Creative Community, Inc. This past February we were granted 501(c)3 non-profit status. So, all contributions are tax-deductible.

Here is a partial list of current financial needs.

• Scholarships (travel, food, etc) for Master Classes for third world artists and leaders from the Compassion, International Leadership Development Program — $1500 each
• Underground electrical services to the lodge — $3500
• Water lines to carry the newly available city water from the street to the lodge location — $5,000

• 12 one bedroom artist cottages scattered in private locations throughout property — $50,000 each
• IMMEDIATE NEED: Complete payoff of the stunning currently owned 124 acres — $193,000 (a balloon payment is due this August)
• 20 acres that controls ingress to property which already contains a 2000 sq. ft house which would provide initial lodging and eventual registration facility, a stunning waterfall, a working barn, and artesian well — $225,000
• A 3500 sq.ft lodge that will be the main gathering space within the community of artist cottages and will house dining and rustic but elegant lodging for the One-on-One mentoring experiences — $350,000

By faith, we have purchased the land and have given over $250,000 of our own money to Creative Community for the current property.

Eleven years ago the re:create Gathering of Creatives came into existence in Franklin, TN. These two opportunities became ongoing realities and a short year later I found myself journeying to the country of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. While changing flights at Heathrow in London, I was challenged by security that I possessed a fake boarding pass. They had never heard of the city Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, nor the country. After confirming that it was indeed a real place, I traveled on.

A few days later, after eighteen hours of flying and another eight harrowing hours driving in a dilapidated van to a remote village in the foothills of the mighty Tien Shen mountains, I found myself conversing on the muddy streets of Karakol, shivering in the snow, with a young man named Rafael.Through the interpreter he asked me, “Randy, what is your dream?” I told him and then in turn, asked him the same question.

The answer caused one of those pivotal moments in life, when your head spins and you realize your life will never be the same.

Rafael answered, “Oh, I want to be a rapper like Ja Rule.”

Imagine standing in a third world village with sewage running around our feet, only one old black and white television in the entire village, literally in the middle of nowhere, and even so, a young man has been influenced by an American artist.

These three events shaped a vision called Kalein.

A place of encouragement. Every creative needs an inordinate amount of encouragement.

The magic in their lives has been churched out, spanked out, combed out and educated out. They’ve been beaten down and told to grow up, for God’s sake, by the ones who are ashamed of what they’ve allowed to wither within.

A place of refreshment. Every creative needs an inordinate amount of refreshment. Empathic creatives tend to give out emotionally to others and in their art, and deplete their emotional tanks.

Solitude, beauty, nature and the sacraments of food and drink offer refreshment for a dry and weary soul.

A place to diffuse ideas. The world needs the ideas of our creatives. For years, my life mantra has been “to influence influencers,” but a true understanding of the word diffuse compels us to identify and influence innovativeinfluencers.

Ideas are spread most effectively by global people of the same tribe gathering together in a refreshing and encouraging environment and exchanging life experiences.

In the past eleven years, re:create has grown into a gathering of 150 global creatives and innovative influencers.

And as eleven years have passed, the weekly mentoring group of two recording artists has grown into a group of ten. I promised them I would always be at our meeting place on Tuesday morning, and only four weeks in eleven years have I sat at our meeting place alone.

I have come to realize that re:create, the mentoring group and Kalein are one and the same.

Kalein is simply an extension of the same three goals.

To refresh, encourage and diffuse ideas.

Kalein is:

• A place of solitude.

• A place of creativity.

• A place of mentoring.

• A place of sacred space.

• A place where gifted artists and leaders are refreshed, encouraged and where the diffusion of ideas begins.

Kalein is such a place. Imagine six young songwriters, cinematographers, singers, culinary artists, fashion designers, painters, writers, illusionists, comedians, poets, philosophers, or contemplatives from all over the globe gathered round a roaring bonfire with real world artists.

These artists serving as master teachers by regaling them with stories about their Grammy and Oscar awards, war stories from the road and stage, practical experiences and the nuances of their craft. Imagine sitting at the feet of some of the greatest artists the world has ever known as they mentor and teach in an intimate and aesthetic setting.

Kalein is such a place. Imagine a place where a leader or pastor who is burned out, tired, or walking through a moral crisis can come for grace filled one-on-one mentoring and friendship with a time-tested veteran of the pastorate or business world. Imagine a safe place of total confidentiality and complete solitude endowed with breath-taking beauty.

Kalein is such a place. Imagine thought leaders and artists from around the world converging for salons to discuss art, leadership and faith. Imagine religious leaders from all faiths coming together to dialogue and collaborate.

“Maggie B” is an award-winning artist and the recipient of Europe’s 2003 Lumiére du Monde Award for public service. She equips the poets. The dreamers. The thinkers. She works to bring people together locally to fashion inspiration that changes humanity globally. Dubbed an iconoclast, a lightning rod and an anomaly, Margaret has spent her career encouraging and empowering persons seeking to work creatively to make a difference in the world. Though most came to know her through her music, it has been through the expanded opportunities of speaking, book writing and teaching that have allowed Margaret to continue to grow in her career as a leader.

“A key element of what good art is to me is its ability to change people, to move them toward doing something they wouldn’t normally do,” she says. And that’s what she hopes to achieve, for herself and those she encounters.  She started out as a recording artist, spending the preponderance of her career with EMI’s Sparrow Records. Across 10 albums—and still counting—she’s accumulated four Dove Awards, four Grammy nominations and 20 No. 1 radio hits. She’s been named songwriter of the year by American Songwriter magazine, the same honor she’s received seven times from the performance rights organization SESAC. Every honor is a cherished one for this prolific songwriter who sings with an enviable voice and fashions a presence that’s at once humble and captivating.

But helping people achieve fulfilling lives drives her, and Margaret’s leadership here is remarkable. She has dedicated herself, as a mentor and record producer, to leading young artists toward creative excellence. Further, Margaret has worked as a guest lecturer on the arts to the Gospel Music Association’s Academy of Arts and serves on the boards of the Sparrow Foundation and of the East Nashville Center for the Creative Arts. She’s the author of three books— the elegant memoir With New Eyes (Harvest House-1999), Growing Up Together (Harvest House-2000), and Braving the Elements: RandomHouse/Waterbrook Press, 2004), which describes living from one personal gifts, outward. She’s been tapped as a lecturer to university students, pastors, business leaders and congregations.

Having lived so much of her professional and spiritual life in public view, Margaret has gained unique credibility now enabling her to be a guide in people’s lives. Like a lush tree where people rest on the strength of mature branches and find shelter under its broad leaves, it’s Margaret’s desire to help people find what they need from that nurturing place. “To empower and encourage people.” It’s what she deems her life mission. And it seems that here, in her continuation of 17 years as a venerable public figure, she is doing just that.

Rules & Regulations

1. Each video submitted must be contestant’s original work. Video may not exceed five (5) minutes in length. Speech, music or communication may have multiple co-writers, but please designate one name only on the application. Contestant may submit as many videos as he/she wishes, but each entry requires a separate entry form and $35. entrance fee. One check or money order for multiple entries/categories is permitted. (Entrance fee is non-refundable. Kalein MC&R is not responsible for late, lost, damaged, misdirected, or misappropriated entries. The Kalein MC&R is not responsible for faulty file uploads accompanying online entries.)

2. Retreat is open to amateur and professional artists.

3. Winners will be chosen by a select panel of judges comprised of noted musicians, writers and industry professionals. Artistry will be judged based on originality, content, and presentation. The quality of production will not be considered. Void where prohibited. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply.

4. Only (8) female artists will be selected for this retreat.

5. Winners will be notified by e-mail and must sign and return an affidavit of eligibility/rights/publicity release within 14 days of notification date. The affidavit will state that winner’s artistry is original work and he/she holds all rights to the music. Failure to sign and return such affidavit within 14 days or provision of false/inaccurate information therein will result in immediate disqualification and an alternate artist will be selected. Affidavits for winners under 18 years of age at time of award must be countersigned by parent or legal guardian. Affidavits subject to verification by Kalein MC&R and its agents. Entry constitutes permission to use winner’s names, likenesses, and voices for future advertising and publicity purposes without additional compensation.

I’ve tried (although the label doesn’t say Pope Valley) Phifer Pavitt’s
bottling comes from Pope Valley, which is legally part
of Napa, but is separated from the valley by Howell Mountain. This is
the second exciting vintage from this producer, and I’m sure that once
people realize how good Pope Valley wines can be, you’ll start to see
and hear more references to the Pope Valley-Napa Valley appellation, as
well as more producers seeking its grapes. (A petition for a Pope
Valley AVA, or American Viticultural Area, is in the works.) The wines
are rich and fleshy, with gobs of fruit and great depth, but not as
heavy as some Cabernets from the valley floor. —J.L.

The tasting will be at the home of Dr. David & Rhonda Kemp and conducted poolside if weather permits.
It will take place Thursday evening, Oct. 1 at 7pm. Suzanne will be
flying in from her Napa Valley home and personally conducting the
tasting. Phifer-Pavitt has graciously donated the wine and her
expenses, so all monies go directly to our charity Kalein
scholarship fund. We will do a comparative tasting of the 2006 (93
rating W.S.)and the rare and sold-out 2005 (94 rating W.S.) “Date
Night” vintages. We will also taste the extraordinary Olabisi Chardonnay from Phifer-Pavitt award-winning winemaker Ted Osborne and possibly a Syrah as well. Plenty of wine complemented by cheeses selected for ideal pairings will be on hand.
